    A New Tattoo

Prepare for your next tattoo: choose a tattoo artist, agree on a design and price, and plan proper aftercare.

    A New Tattoo

Choose Your Design and Tattoo Artist Carefully

A tattoo is a choice you should be able to feel happy with for a long time. Consider the design, size and placement, and look at the tattoo artist's previous work—ideally including pictures of healed tattoos, not just brand-new ones.

Choose a professional studio with clear hygiene procedures. Ask about sterile needles, equipment handling and aftercare guidance. Age limits and rules on placement vary between countries; check the rules where you will be getting tattooed.

Agree on the Details Before Your Appointment

Discuss the design, expected time required, price and whether multiple sessions may be needed. Tell the tattoo artist about any relevant allergies, skin problems and medication. If you are ill or have concerns about your skin, seek medical advice and consider postponing the appointment.

If you want to use numbing cream, agree on this with the tattoo artist in advance. Always follow the instructions for the specific product, and do not use it on larger areas or in greater quantities than recommended.

    Prepare for the Day

Get enough sleep, eat a normal meal and drink water. Avoid alcohol before your session. Never stop taking prescribed medication on your own in order to get a tattoo; ask your doctor if necessary.

Choose comfortable clothing that allows access to the area. Tell the tattoo artist if you feel unwell or need a break. Discomfort varies depending on the placement, the length of the session and your own sensitivity.

    Look After Your New Tattoo

Follow the tattoo artist's instructions on dressings, cleaning and aftercare. Wash your hands before touching the area, and avoid picking at scabs. Avoid bathing and activities that irritate the skin until the area has healed as instructed.

Seek medical attention for signs of infection such as increasing pain, warmth, widespread redness, pus or fever. Once the skin has healed, sun protection helps protect both your skin and your tattoo.
